When choosing a wire feeder at the beginning, the many factors to consider may seem overwhelming. Here are the answers to the questions that buyers often ask.

Q: Can I add a wire feeder to any type of power supply?

A: The feeder can be paired with three basic types of DC power sources: constant voltage (CV), constant current (CC), or power sources with both capabilities (CV/CC). It is not recommended to use the wire feeder with machines that only output AC. Generally speaking, only CV power sources are dedicated to wire welding, typically for MIG or flux cored wire welding processes. They do not have, nor can they convert into stick or TIG abilities. Usually, only CC power supplies are purchased for rod welding or TIG welding, but wire feeders can be added. The CC/CV power supply can inherently perform all three processes.

Q: What is the difference between a constant speed wire feeder and a voltage sensing wire feeder?
A: There are two types of feeders: constant speed or voltage induction. The constant speed wire feeder is used in conjunction with the CV power supply. The power supply is set to voltage, while the wire feeding speed (control current) is set to a constant speed wire feeder. Voltage sensing wire feeder (sometimes referred to as voltage following or variable speed) can be paired with CC or CC power supply. When the voltage sensing wire feeder is paired with the CC power supply, the current is adjusted at the power supply, and the voltage directly changes with the distance (arc length) between the electrode and the workpiece. Welding machines are usually limited to spherical and spray transfer MIG welding processes.
