The development research and production preparation of new cars have complex structures, and most cars are mass-produced products. If early damage or non-compliance with usage requirements is found under complex usage conditions after automobile production, it will cause huge losses to users and manufacturers. Therefore, after the 1920s, experience was gradually summarized and a design finalization program and production preparation work program were formed before the product was put into production.
Before developing research and developing products, technical and market predictions are conducted to determine the development direction. Then, based on the results of technical and economic analysis and the series of components, the main parameters and structural solutions of the product are selected. After the design is completed, a prototype vehicle will be produced and subjected to type testing (see automotive testing).
The production preparation of cars that have been tested and finalized requires preparation work for the process, equipment, and process equipment (tools, fixtures, molds, and measuring tools, etc.) before being put into production. Only small batch production of heavy-duty vehicles and specialized vehicles does not require significant production preparation. For mass-produced cars, the process equipment coefficient (the average number of process equipment required for each part) often reaches 5-6, and the total manufacturing hours reach millions. In major automobile producing countries, process equipment is manufactured by specialized factories, and automobile factories only provide standardized product drawings and production guidelines. These professional factories can equip themselves with process equipment and specialized equipment in a short period of time (around 1 year), making it easier for car manufacturers to change models.
Due to fierce competition, sedans have to change their appearance almost every year, and the main components such as the engine are often replaced every few years. Although it is possible to quickly change models, companies often consider economic benefits and adopt a gradual approach of changing models. Only in urgent situations can new structural models be developed.
